Some years ago, a new neighbor moved into my floor right across the hall. She adopted a boy who is now four years old. His name is Alexander. They have a cat named Henry. I am going on 99 and am enrolled in a managed care group which supplies me with an aide who is an extremely competent and handsome Jamaican woman named Koreen who was asked to sit the lad a couple of times.
It seemed like a good idea for me to make friends with Alexander and tried approaches, such as offering to lend him my back scratcher to tickle Henry with. But he didn't respond and remained aloof. So, I didn't insist. I think I may have looked scary to him with my straggly mane in need of a haircut, toothlessness, and so on.
A few days ago, Koreen came in, laughing. She told me, "I saw Alexander in the hall and he asked "How's your husband?'" Yesterday, Kareen said she bumped into Alexander again in the elevator and he said "Tell him, hello."
